I had many difficulties when I started to learn English. Since I come from Chaoshan District, I could not tell / r / from / l /. Because they sound exactly the same in my dialect, I had great difficulty in telling “right” from “light”. My poor memory was another challenge for me when I decided to enlarge my vocabulary. In order to tell the slight difference between / r / and / l /, I forced myself to practice a lot every day. Whenever I started to speak English, I reminded myself of the difference between “right” and “light” as well as “read” and “lead”.
